“Imagine how you might feel about your writing if instead of typing it on a computer or writing it longhand you were dictating it to a baby elephant holding a stylus in his trunk.” This provocation comes from Stephen Nachmanovitch Free Play: Improvisation in life and art, p37-8. The suggestion is that inspiration comes straight from the heart, but sometimes needs to be explained or translated. Our Muse is the vehicle of that translation.
