Many years ago you could go to the store and purchase food and household items with minimalist black and white labels that curtly described the contents of the package. You could purchase “Beer” or “Peanut Butter” at a much lower cost than you could buy “Budweiser” or “Skippy” brand name goods.
We still can buy generic, no-name brands of these items, but today’s generic packaging comes in full color and even with some attention being given to graphic design. Undoubtedly, this change in approach is due in part to the emergence of new digital technologies.
Return to the “good old days” of minimalist generic packaging. Create a new product that wasn’t available for purchase two or three decades ago. Provide only a simple black and white description on the package. Do you think people would buy it? Why or why not?
